How Humectants Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin Work

Humectants are hydrophilic molecules (water-attracting) that bind moisture into the stratum corneum (outermost skin layer), helping to maintain hydration and barrier integrity. 


Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan found in the skin’s extracellular matrix (the structural network between skin cells). It holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water and functions across multiple skin depths depending on molecular weight.


Glycerin is a low molecular weight agent that draws water into the skin and supports enzymatic activity involved in barrier repair and natural desquamation (skin cell turnover).


In rosacea-prone skin, where the barrier is often impaired and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) (water loss through the skin surface) is elevated, HA and glycerin help restore hydration, reduce reactivity, and improve skin comfort without triggering irritation.
